ネパールは、私にとって、そしてルーム・トゥ・リードにとって、とても特別な場所です。
約26年前、私たちの活動はネパールから始まりました。農村部の子どもたちのもとへ本を届けることから始まった小さな一歩。その背景にあったのは、子どもが学ぶ機会を得ることで、どれほど多くの可能性が生まれるのかという信念でした。
それからルーム・トゥ・リードは大きく成長しましたが、ネパールは今も、私たちの歩みと活動の原点として深く刻まれています。
このたびの大規模な洪水による被害には、胸が痛みます。尊い命が失われ、多くのご家族が悲しみに包まれています。住まいや学校、生活に必要なインフラも大きな被害を受けています。
ルーム・トゥ・リードのネパール事務所のスタッフ、そしてパートナー団体の皆さんの無事を確認し、心から安堵しています。一方で、スタッフやその地域のコミュニティの中にも、今回の洪水による影響を受けている人々がいます。私たちが活動する地域の子どもたちや学校も、直接的な被害を受けています。
子どもたちの生活に大きな混乱が生じたとき、学びの機会もまた失われてしまう可能性があります。だからこそ、子どもたちが学び続けられる環境を守ることが重要です。
ルーム・トゥ・リード・ネパールでは、現地の行政や地域コミュニティと緊密に連携しながら、子どもたちが今、そして復旧・復興の過程で何を必要としているのかを丁寧に確認しています。今後の支援も、こうした現地の声をもとに進めていきます。
世界中のルーム・トゥ・リードの仲間からも、ネパールの状況を心配し、「何かできることはないか」と温かい声が寄せられています。心から感謝します。
今後、支援を希望してくださる皆さまには、私たちが現地でどのような取り組みを進めているのか、改めてお伝えしていきます。
私たちのネパールへの想いは、ネパールで活動する仲間たち、そして約26年前からルーム・トゥ・リードの歩みを形づくってきた地域の皆さまの中に、今も息づいています。

ネパール大規模洪水 │ ご支援・ご寄付について
8月26日にネパールと中国・チベット自治区の国境地域で発生した大規模な洪水により、深刻な被害が広がっています。最新の報道によると、1,000人を超える方が亡くなり、約4,000人が行方不明となっています（9月1日・AP通信）
ルーム・トゥ・リード・ネパールのスタッフおよびパートナーの安全は確認されています。一方、一部の支援対象校にも被害が報告されており、現在、現地チームが状況を確認し、必要な支援の検討を進めています。
すでにたくさんの方々から、ご心配やお見舞いのメッセージをお寄せいただき、心より感謝申し上げます。

Nepal holds a very special place in my heart, and in Room to Read’s history.

Almost 26 years ago, our story began there, with books carried into rural communities and a belief in what becomes possible when a child has the chance to learn. Room to Read has grown enormously since then, but Nepal remains woven into who we are.
It has been heartbreaking to see the devastation caused by the recent floods. Lives have been lost and families are grieving. Homes and schools have been damaged. I am deeply relieved that our Room to Read colleagues and partner teams are safe, even as some are experiencing the effects in their own communities. Children and schools where we work have also been directly affected.
When so much in a child’s life is disrupted, learning can easily become another loss. Protecting that continuity matters.
Across Room to Read Nepal, our colleagues are listening closely to local government and the communities they are part of, assessing what children need now and as recovery unfolds. Our response will grow from there.
I’ve been touched by those across our global Room to Read community who have reached out with care and asked how they can help. Thank you. We will share more with those who want to support this work.
Our commitment to Nepal lives in our Nepali colleagues and the communities that have shaped Room to Read from the beginning. Almost 26 years later, we remain committed to making sure children can keep learning.
How You Can Support
On August 26, severe flooding occurred in the border region between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, causing widespread and devastating damage. According to the latest reports, more than 1,000 people have died and approximately 4,000 remain missing (Associated Press, September 1).
We have confirmed the safety of Room to Read Nepal staff and partners. However, some schools supported by Room to Read have also been affected. Our local team is currently assessing the situation and considering what support may be needed.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has reached out with messages of concern and sympathy for the people of Nepal.
