2026年6月21日、東京・芝公園にある芝パークホテルにて、ハーバード大学の名門アカペラグループ「The Harvard Krokodiloes（ハーバード・クロコディローズ）」によるチャリティミニコンサートが開催されました。
約2,000冊の蔵書を誇る「Library Hotel」の落ち着いた空間に、タキシード姿の学生たちが奏でる美しいハーモニーが響き渡り、多くの来場者を魅了しました。
当日は、ルーム・トゥ・リード日本リージョナル・ボードメンバーであり、ハーバード大学およびハーバード・ロースクール卒業生でもある国際写真家のジョエル・プリアムさん、そして特別ゲストとして、お笑いタレント・コメンテーターでハーバード大学卒業生のパックン（パトリック・ハーランさん）にご登壇いただきました。
「教育は、私たちが行うことのできる最も効果的な投資」
コンサートに先立ち、ルーム・トゥ・リード日本リージョナル・ボードメンバーのジョエル・プリアムさんが、ルーム・トゥ・リードの活動について紹介しました。
30年前にハーバード大学へ通っていた当時を振り返り、「当時から多くのことが変わりましたが、一つだけ変わらないものがあります。それは、ハーバード・クロコディローズの素晴らしい音楽です」とユーモアを交えて語り、会場を和ませながらスピーチを始めました。
続いて、「子どもの教育が世界を変える」というルーム・トゥ・リードの理念を紹介。現在はアジアやアフリカをはじめ29か国で活動し、2025年だけでも1,700万人以上の子どもたちへ教育プログラムを届けていること、さらに教師研修や現地語による児童書・教材の開発などを通じて、教育システムそのものを強化する持続可能なアプローチを進めていることを説明しました。
最後に、「教育は、私たちが行うことのできる最も効果的な投資の一つです」と語り、来場者へルーム・トゥ・リードへの支援を呼びかけました。
パックンが語った「教育が人生を変える力」
続いて登壇した特別ゲストのパックン（パトリック・ハーランさん）は、自身が母子家庭で育ち、幼少期には新聞配達をしながら家計を支えていた経験を紹介しました。
経済的に厳しい環境の中でも、本や読み書きに支えられ、ハーバード大学へ進学した自身の歩みを振り返りながら、教育が人生を大きく変える力を持つことを、自身の体験を交えて語りました。
「世界中の子どもたちが教育を受けられる環境を整えることの大切さ」を来場者へ伝え、そのメッセージはルーム・トゥ・リードの活動への理解をより深める機会となりました。
ハーバード・クロコディローズが届けた特別な一夜
1946年の創設以来、世界60か国以上で公演を続けてきたハーバード・クロコディローズ。
この日はジャズやファンク、ロックンロール、バラードなど幅広いレパートリーに加え、「Sukiyaki」をはじめとする日本語の楽曲も披露し、会場は大きな拍手と笑顔に包まれました。コンサートの様子はこちら。
“Library Hotel”ならではの知的で落ち着いた空間と、学生たちの洗練されたハーモニーが見事に調和し、来場者にとって忘れられないひとときとなりました。

昨年に続き、The Harvard Krokodiloesの皆さんを芝パークホテルにお迎えできることを、大変光栄に思います。
芝パークホテルは1948年創業、この芝の地で時を重ねながら「人をもてなす」というホテルの原点を大切にしてまいりました。
近年のリニューアルを経て、私たちはLibrary Hotelとして、館内各所に約2,000冊の書籍を揃えました。本は、知を広げ、心を整え、ときに人生の景色を変えてくれる存在です。中央大階段を囲む大書棚やライブラリーラウンジの落ち着いた空気感のなかで、ページをめくる時間そのものが、旅の記憶になる――そんな滞在を目指しています。
今回のミニコンサートでは、タキシード姿の学生たちが紡ぐアカペラのハーモニーが、静かな知的空間にやわらかく響き渡ります。どうぞ肩の力を抜いて、心ゆくまで耳を傾け、ゆったりとおくつろぎください。
さらに、音楽の余韻とともに募金という形でご参加いただくことが、世界の子どもたちの学びを支える力になります。皆さまと一緒に、あたたかな夜をつくれれば幸いです。

On June 21, 2026, The Harvard Krokodiloes, Harvard University’s renowned a cappella group, performed a charity mini concert at Shiba Park Hotel in Tokyo.
Held in the hotel’s tranquil “Library Hotel” setting, home to approximately 2,000 books, the evening featured beautiful harmonies performed by the students in tuxedos, captivating guests from around the world.
Special guests included Joel Pulliam, an internationally recognized photographer, Harvard University and Harvard Law School graduate, and Regional Board Member of Room to Read Japan, as well as Patrick Harlan (Pakkun), comedian, TV commentator, and Harvard University graduate.
“Education Is One of the Most Effective Investments We Can Make”
Before the performance, Joel introduced Room to Read and its mission.
Reflecting on his own days at Harvard over 30 years ago, he opened his remarks with humor:
“Many things have changed since I was a student at Harvard, but one thing has remained exactly the same—the wonderful music of The Harvard Krokodiloes.”
He then shared Room to Read’s belief that children’s education has the power to transform the world. Today, the organization works across 29 countries in Asia, Africa, and beyond. In 2025 alone, Room to Read reached more than 17 million children through its education programs.
Joel also highlighted the organization’s long-term, systems-focused approach, which includes teacher professional development, the creation of children’s books and learning materials in local languages, and close collaboration with governments to strengthen education systems.
He concluded with a powerful message:
“Education is one of the most effective investments we can make.”
and invited guests to support Room to Read’s work around the world.
Pakkun on the Life-Changing Power of Education
Patrick Harlan (Pakkun), the evening’s special guest, shared his own inspiring story.
Raised by a single mother, Patrick spoke about delivering newspapers as a child to help support his family. Despite financial hardship, books, literacy, and education opened doors that eventually led him to Harvard University.
Drawing from his personal experience, he spoke passionately about how education can change the course of a person’s life and emphasized the importance of ensuring that children everywhere have access to quality education.
His heartfelt message deepened guests’ understanding of Room to Read’s mission and the transformative impact of educational opportunity.
An Unforgettable Performance by The Harvard Krokodiloes
Founded in 1946, The Harvard Krokodiloes have performed in more than 60 countries around the world.
Their performance featured an energetic mix of jazz, funk, rock and roll, ballads, and several Japanese songs, including the beloved classic Sukiyaki. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause and warm smiles throughout the evening.
Set against the elegant and intellectual atmosphere of Shiba Park Hotel’s Library Hotel, the students’ sophisticated harmonies created a truly memorable experience for everyone in attendance.

During the event, guests were invited to support Room to Read through cash and QR-code donations.
Thanks to the generosity of attendees from many different countries, we raised funds equivalent to approximately 180 locally authored children’s books, helping more children discover the joy of reading in their own languages.
