Room to Read promotes collaboration with schools across Japan. At Seisen International School, which we are featuring in this article, students are encouraged from a young age to actively engage with social issues and take action, contributing to global efforts in supporting children’s education.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Future Through Community Engagement
From Planning to Operation – Learning Together through a Handmade Market
On May 29, second-grade students organized and ran a “Farmers Market” (see official report [here]). The market featured vegetables grown by the students and handmade crafts. It was impressive to see the children speak directly to visitors about the importance of environmental awareness and fair trade. Through both the preparation and the event day, the students learned the value of teamwork and community involvement. Proceeds from the sales were donated to Room to Read.

WESC(Women’s Education Support Committee), mainly composed of middle and high school students, engages in charity initiatives focusing on global education and environmental issues. This year, they hosted a screening of the film She Creates Change and held a bake sale, donating all proceeds. They also encouraged the school community to donate used books, which were collected and processed through the “Charibon” secondhand book donation service, with the resulting funds donated to Room to Read.
In the IB PYP (Primary Years Program) Exhibition project, the fifth-grade students explore a social issue of interest and present their findings. This year, one group focused on gender equality. Through interviews and research involving educational organizations like Room to Read, students reflected on what they can do as members of society and turned their learning into action.
